Count characters for X/Twitter posts against the 280-character limit, live as you type. Free, private, runs in your browser. No upload — runs 100% in your browser
Standard X (formerly Twitter) accounts can post 280 characters; before 2017 the ceiling was 140. This counter shows your current length and how much of the 280 you have left, updating with every keystroke, so you can trim before the app rejects the post.
X does not count characters quite like a text editor, and this page deliberately counts the plain way:
The practical consequence: if this counter says you have 10–20 characters of headroom, your post will fit even with a couple of emoji or a link. If you are at 279 with several emoji, trim a bit more before posting. Line breaks and hashtags count as normal characters.
It has no idea who you are — no account, no login, nothing leaves the page. That is the point of doing the counting locally instead of inside the app.
No. Everything on this page runs inside your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your file never leaves your device — you can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool still works.
Emoji, CJK characters and links are weighted: most emoji count as 2, and any URL is normalized to 23 characters by t.co shortening. Keep some headroom if your post contains them.
Yes — a line break is 1 character and hashtags/mentions count as ordinary text.
This page checks the standard 280 limit. Longer limits for subscribed accounts still benefit from the live count; just use it as a plain character measure.
