FAQ

What does an MLA in-text citation look like?

Author and page number in parentheses with no comma: (Smith 45). If you name the author in your sentence, only the page number goes in parentheses.

How many authors before et al. in MLA?

Two authors are both named (Smith, John, and Mary Jones). With three or more, MLA 9 uses the first author followed by et al.

Should I include a URL or a DOI?

MLA prefers a DOI when the source has one. Otherwise give a permalink or URL, written without the leading http:// or https://.

Does MLA still need the city of publication?

For most books, no — MLA 9 dropped the publisher city. Give the publisher and year only, unless your instructor asks for older-style entries.

Are my citations uploaded anywhere?

No. The page is self-contained JavaScript and everything stays in your browser.
