APA Citation Generator — Free, No Signup

APA is an author-date system: the in-text citation is (Author, Year), and the reference list is alphabetical by first author. Every element of the reference — author, date, title, source — ends in its own period.

FAQ

How do I cite in APA in the text?

Use author-date: (Smith, 2020) for a parenthetical citation, or Smith (2020) when the name is part of your sentence. With one or two authors name every author every time; with three or more, use the first author plus et al.

How many authors do I list in the reference?

List all authors up to 20, with an ampersand before the last. For 21 or more, list the first 19, then an ellipsis, then the final author — no ampersand in that case.

Do I need a DOI?

Include the DOI whenever the work has one, formatted as a full https://doi.org/ link. If there is no DOI and you retrieved the work outside a research database, include the URL instead. Do not put a period after either.

Does APA 7 include the publisher location?

No. APA 7 dropped the publisher city from book references; the entry is author, year, italicized title, publisher.

Is anything I type uploaded?

No — the generator is pure browser-side JavaScript, so your references are never sent to a server.
